Is Strength Training And Cardio Important Everyday

June 15, 2009

The question is will you get better results from doing both cardio and a strength-training routine everyday?  The answer is a firm NO!  It doesn’t work, as you need ample time to recover after a strength-training workout before you tear down the muscles again!

When you exercise you put stress on your joints, tendons, and ligaments as you are contracting your muscles again and again. This causes microtrauma, or very little tears in the muscle. If you get the rest needed between workouts, this causes the brain to rebuild the body stronger than it was before, but it takes TIME!

So, this rule of thumb is working out  too much makes you weaker, rest and recovery makes you stronger!

First THANK YOU!! So much for your show!! Being a mom of 6 young children and living out in the country – trips to the gym (like there is one) would be only happen in my dreams. Your show brought more growth, variety, and fun into my daily workouts.

I HAVE to do some kind of excercise every day (except Sunday). It does wonders for my mood and energy level. I’m just cranky and more tired on days that I don’t.

What I like to do is the cardio/strength, on alternate days with jogging and yoga in between- never doing two hard workouts in a row. But I wonder if this is the way to do it- I want to become stronger not weaker as you say. My goal on “easy” workout days is just sweat and feel good. I love a comfortable jog the day after a hard workout session. And what I have been doing is just listening to my body, but the need to do something physical everyday before getting into my Mommy Day is an absolute must for me.

Am I following a good plan?

Got something to say?
